Verra is the most relevant voluntary carbon market registry and oversees several environmental standards, including the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and Climate, Community & Biodiversity Standards (CCB). 

VCS

Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) is the world’s most widely used standard for carbon offsets. 

It enables individuals and businesses to offset their carbon footprint by investing in projects that reduce or avoid emissions, remove CO2 from the atmosphere, and support environmental initiatives. 

Through VCS, corporations may also compensate other businesses with surplus carbon allowance in their carbon budget, thereby further promoting sustainable practices.

CCB

The Climate, Community & Biodiversity Standards (CCB) is another key standard managed by Verra focused on land management projects that conserve and restore ecosystems while benefiting climate, communities, and biodiversity. 

CCB standards are designed to go “beyond carbon” and identify projects that provide significant net benefits and ensure that communities and biodiversity are not adversely impacted.

REDD+

REDD+ is a United Nations-backed framework aiming to combat climate change by preventing the destruction of forests. 

The acronym stands for “Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation”; the “+” represents the roles of conservation, sustainable management of forests, and enhancement of forest carbon stocks.

Forests play a crucial role in mitigating climate change as they absorb carbon dioxide (CO2), one of the key greenhouse gases (GHE) contributing to global warming. 

Unfortunately, the destruction of tropical forests accounts for about 11% of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. REDD+ strives to offer incentives for protecting, conserving, and restoring forest ecosystems in developing countries.
